A not-so-secret

In which I tell you a secret
I read and drive.

Children's historical mysteries - Bermuda Triangle! The failed Franklin Expedition! Donner Party! - with large print and pictures work best. However checking out such books from the library makes me feel a little out of sorts, and you will seldom find me perusing through them.

Lately I have been using my daylight driving times for catching up on my subscription to the New Yorker and perusing Shawn Wong's American Knees. Both items have small print, few amusing images and I lose my place a lot.

That being said, I do remember a time when even having the radio on was too much of a distraction for a neophyte driver such as myself. I also recall my driver's ed teacher admonishing us with stories of women applying mascara and eyeliner in the car and other multi-tasking drivers who were putting themselves on the market for Danger and Possibly a Ticket From the Police.
"Damn, those people are idiots," I thought to myself. "Good thing I'll never be like that."

Mphm.

It does give me something to do, particularly when I'm waiting waiting waiting for my car to move forward. Long stretches of road are better than stop-and-go city driving. But in reality, the payoff isn't that good, since I am constantly keeping an eye out on traffic lights, traffic itself, and other potentially worse drivers. I don't absorb that much from what I do read.

I don't think you would have a problem reading while in the driver's seat. A children's ride at the state fair goes faster than traffic in your area.
